Summary: This doctoral dissertation aims to describe and analyze relationships between recreation and childhood education in the city - mediated by play and toy - from an incursion into two empirical places: an early childhood education institution and a public park, both in the city of Vitória - ES. In dialogue with the works on the cultural industry by Adorno and Horkheimer, as well as Walter Benjamin´s writings on his archaeology of modernity, it focuses on the relations between nature and culture that are produced in the city. In it, “anti-urban laments” emerge and highlight the need for outdoor life, physical exercises and nature games, among others, which demand the creation of new spaces. Such spaces produce and redesign a nature within the city, in which childhood comes into play as an expression of a (human) nature. In this context, recreational and educational environments are (re)configured, to the same extent that the relationships between adults and children are (re)organized. Also the typologies and purposes of toys and games are historically updated and, in the contemporary, present themselves with new faces, through an explosion of practices and discourses that update and emphasize the \"natural\" in the triad childhood, recreation and early childhood education. With qualitative character and ethnographic inspiration, with sources produced by means of documentary analysis, field observation and interviews with actors who work in education and in childhood recreation, the study depicts three categories of analysis that aim to gather the proposed objective and to give materiality to our time: photography, the workshop presenters and the fence that put in check the possibility of a (re)approximation with nature, which, mediated by the technique, ends up reaffirming, on the contrary, an always still damaged relationship or a pseudo-reconciliation.
