Summary: The mat Pilates method has become common among the healthy public as an option of physical activity to offer classes in group and its low cost compared to Pilates method with apparatus. Considering that all the exercises used in mat Pilates method involve breath control it is plausible wait that your practice can bring beneficial changes to respiratory mechanics. Thus, this study aimed analyzes the effects of time mat Pilates practice in respiratory kinematics. For this, was made the three-dimensional kinematic analysis of respiratory movements of healthy women distributed in Pilates group (n = 10) and control (n = 07) during respiratory maneuvers in tidal volume and vital capacity. From the 3D coordinates of markers positioned on the chest and abdomen the mobility of upper chest, lower chest and abdomen was calculates, as well as the contribution of compartments for total mobility and coordination between them during the baseline (time zero) and after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of mat Pilates training. The expandability and the contribution of the compartments were evaluated by the magnitude of the volume curve in function of time and coordination by the phase angle. The trunk total expandability and abdomen in tidal volume increased in the Pilates group after three months of training, but the abdomen reduced the expandability after nine months. After twelve months of training with mat Pilates, the total expansion of the trunk and lower chest increased during vital capacity. The control group increased the expandability of the lower chest after twelve in both tidal volume as well as in vital capacity. The contribution of the lower chest of Pilates group increased in both respiratory maneuvers after nine and twelve months. The control group also increased the lower chest contribution both in tidal volume and vital capacity after nine and twelve month, but the abdominal compartment contribution reduced after three and twelve months. The coordination between the compartments (upper chest vs. lower chest) was smaller in the Pilates group compared to the control group during the tidal volume at baseline and after six months. These results suggest a larger use of the diaphragm muscle of both groups. However, the practice of mat Pilates increases impact the total expansion of the trunk in the respiratory maneuvers, which was not observed in the control group. In general, twelve months of mat Pilates increases thoracoabdominal mobility in healthy women.
